Tablescaping refers to the Instagram trend of beautiful, and sometimes heavily decorated, tables. From wedding settings to rustic garden table arrangements, these tablescapes are dream-like and leave us all feeling inspired. But is setting a table really that intricate? What does tablescaping actually encompass? And how do you colour coordinate an entire table?
Fortunately, with a little guidance you can master the art of tablescaping. The team at Peyton & Tyler, a premium homewares outlet which connects beautiful products with environmentally-minded shoppers, share their expertise on creating the perfect tablescape.
Choose your colour palette
'When venturing into the world of tablescaping, you should choose your colour palette before you do anything else; this will form the foundation of your table setting and will help you bring your chosen theme (if you have one) to life,' advise Peyton & Tyler.
If you don't have a theme, let your personal style and imagination run wild, but try to restrict the number of colours you use.
'As a rule of thumb, we would recommend focusing on two main colours; you can add splashes of additional colours across your table but you don't want aesthetically unappealing clashes,' they add.
Don't be afraid to mix and match
Tablescaping is an art so don't be afraid to be creative!
'Sometimes, busy patterns actually look great alongside one another, whilst flower arrangements can look particularly beautiful. Step outside of your comfort zone and you'll create a beautiful table setting,' explain Peyton & Tyler.
Remember the essentials
Tablescaping helps you create a setting that stands out from the crowd, so why settle for plate designs that you've seen a thousand times before? When it comes to crockery, white plates are a classic option but they won't suit every table. You could consider black plates or colourful alternatives, or if you've chosen a darker table cover, consider unique plates with bold designs to help to make your table setting shine.
'For example, our Sancai range incorporates plates and bowls with a coffee-coloured stripe down the left side of each product; they're unusual and incredibly popular for this reason,' explain Peyton & Tyler.
You should also consider which pieces of crockery to incorporate – will having plates and bowls of the same colour give your table more depth? Or if you're using lots of decorative elements, will this make it look cluttered? And think about the colour of the cutlery you choose – will gold knives and forks better complement your rose-pink plates?

Consider your centrepiece
Something you always need to consider for a tablescape is your centrepiece. Flowers may instantly spring to mind and they're a great choice, but there are other decorative elements that could become the heart of your table.
Peyton & Tyler suggest extravagant fruit bowls for springtime gathering, a collection of candles for intimate evening meals, and family photos for personal get-togethers.

Remember how important the little details are
Nothing can complete a table more perfectly than thoughtful little details. Think of handmade name cards, fairy lights, glasses or mugs to suit your theme, folded napkins, decorative ornaments (think lanterns and golden pineapples in the summer, and pumpkins for autumnal celebrations) and matching placemats. Collectively, these small additions will truly transform your table.
Add height to your table setting
The perfect tablescape needs to have depth. Peyton & Tyler suggest placing tall candles, long-stem flowers and other tall elements to your table to add some height.

Tablescape sustainably
Invest in products that you know you'll use time and time again to enjoy completely guilt-free tablescaping. 'After all, if you're going to create a beautiful table, you want to make sure it protects our environment,' add Peyton & Tyler.
